SBS 2008/Windows 7

Thanks for this great plug-in! I managed to install it, it works, but I am not able to find the log files to check for any clipping that may occur. Is there someone who knows where to find these on a SBS2008 box? I followed the directions on this website for the various OS's, but SBS2008 seems to be structured differently (and has no easy search function so that does not work either). Any help would be appreciated.

Also, I am not able to (re)view the setting of the EQ in my browser (Explorer 8 in Windows 7). It says "Cannot initialize Silverlight: Object expected", whereas most recent version of Silverlight is installed. Any help on this is appreciated as well.

Kind regards, Dela

Linux SC7.4

I also have Inguz working on Mac OS X with SC 7.3.2.

I did find one small bug in the custom-convert.conf file that prevented it from playing AACPlus streams. (I'm guessing I'm the only one who is using this feature.) It was greyed out in the File Types pref pane. I had a look in custom-convert.conf and noticed that
there was a space missing after the #. I changed it from #IFR to # IFR and it work. Lucky guess!

I also noticed an error in my SC server log file showing that UHJ was undefined. So I went through all the custom files and deleted all UHJ references. That fixed it.

I, of course, forgot that Inguz disables synchronization. That was causing some stuttering trouble until I turned it off.

Off to measure my new listening room.

As always, thanks to Inguz for this great software. Contribution coming your way. ('Get a Mac!').

cheers,
muski

How to pick the best volume tradeoff during cal?

With the movement of some room furniture I felt like I needed to re-do my sweeps and recal my system. I had the following problem before, but I don't think I ever resolved the correct approach...

I'm using an E-mu 0404 USB mic preamp; pretty nice unit for the money. When I first got it I calibrated the inputs to determine just at which point on the input feed volume adjustments (both channels) the preamp would begin to roll off the input signal response. I have those points marked for both the mic input and the comparison signal input.

During sweeps I find that in order to stay at this "optimum preamp volume" point I have to raise my actual stereo preamp volume so that I hit a number of room resonance points during the sweep. So the question I've had is whether it's better to do a sweep that way, or sacrifice some preamp response and raise its volume, so as not to get quite so loud a set room resonances? The actual stereo volume during the sweeps is generally only a click or so louder than what I'd call my average listening volume (really not that loud, but the sweeps come through louder than music).

BTW, I still can't get the Inguz internal Test Signals to work, so I'm now using this method

http://www.tarind.com/brutefir_drc.html

My problems with the Inguz sweeps are documented in the General forum.

By deleting the InguzEQ folder from the plugins folder, and doing a complete Inguz reinstall its working pretty well now. Test tones work fine and so does correction playing flac files.

However a couple of things are not working:
1. No correction of 88.2 and 96 kHz on SB3. It seems the new feature of server SoX downsampling is having first priority, and is somehow preventing Inguz to work. (Note, this problem only applies to SB3, on the Transporter it works fine as one would expect since no SoX downsampling is done).

2. No correction of mp3 files, the inguz and lame processes start, but nothing is played and the SB3/Transporter is just waiting.
Measurements with a subwoofer

I don't think I've seen a discussion here of how best to take measurements using a subwoofer and DRC. I assume the method would vary depending on whether you're using a line-level or speaker-level input, whether you're using a high-pass filter, and whether the sub is getting a mono or stereo signal. Anyone really happy with sub integration into their systems using Inguz? Care to share what you did?

I used to have a sub in my music system, but was considering adding one of the newer RELs in the near future.

After the move from 6.5 to 7.0 was a bit of a struggle, I guess I felt kinda burnt by seeing an endless stream of "work" going forward, and the overall release process (building and testing the installers in particular is a pain).

What I need is just enough of a "push" to jump: to upgrade my own system, live without music for as long as it takes to fix the plugin compatibility issues, then put out the next release.
And I think this is it :-)

We're still here, Hugh!
SIMPLE EQ FOR BALANCE ONLY.... ON MAC WITH OS X?

QUOTE(lreinstein @ Sep 14 2008, 03:36 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I use the Squeezebox3 and run Squeezecenter on my new Macbook pro. My primary listening room requires a seating arrangement so that I am constantly having to get up to adjust the L/R BALANCE on my amplifier to correct for where I am sitting.

mine is a multi-part question.

1. will the inguz equalizer run on OS X? if not, is this being worked on?

2. If the L/R balance control is all i need, is the intense processing (CPU) power still an issue?

3. Is there a simple software EQ (plugin) that will work with SB that addresses the L/R Balance issue only?

Any suggestions on how I might solve this probelm are really appreciated.

Larry

I can't answer your key question about OS X but there is a fair amount of chatter here and on the Slim forum on the subject. A number of people have at least tried it. A forum search should get you the answers.

Regarding your 'balance' need; depending on the speaker/seating arrangement, there may be a better tool in Inguz than the balance control. Inguz allows you to delay one speaker's output in reference to the other speaker. If the only issue is sitting nearer to one speaker, this comes closer to a real cure than simply making the more distant speaker louder.

There may be other issues at play in your room. If you can describe the room, the seating and the speaker placement, I can be more specific.

I would also suggest considering use of the EQ itself. Where a high quality EQ like the Inguz excels is not in fixing gross problems but in making a nearly linear system better.

For me, a combination of the Inguz tools made an otherwise pretty good 'background' system, a reference system.

Plugin compatible with Linux (debian) and Squeezecenter?

Hi,

I followed the installation instructions for slimserver, changed slightly with squeezecenter to reflect the different directories, but when I go into the Plugins tab, it tells me that this plugin is incompatible with this version of squeezecenter. I'm running the newest version, 7.2.something. Is there a version of squeezecenter that I can downgrade to to make the eq plugin work? Thanks!

Frank

Pegging CPU running DRC with Squeezecenter 7.02

I am running Squeezecenter 7.02 on a Centos 5.x box and running Inguz DRC. My box is a dual Xeon 2.8 and I see the mono process hit 150% or more when I first start up the box. This causes the music to stutter a bit. Eventually the stuttering stops. The mono process is still very high (obviously doing a lot of calcs for DRC). Is there something I can do to force the optimization on startup so that it does not stutter through songs.

Also on a separate note, if I only want DRC on one of my 3 Squeezeboxes, is there a way to tell the plugin to not run, or run in a minimal way for the 2 non-DRC boxes?

Thanks,

-MA

I'm having the same issue as earthpulse with no audible impact of even the EQ functions - but unlike his situation my terminal commands all bring the appropriate response. I should also say I'm seeing the bug referred to above where the EQ settings only seem to work in the negative direction - but again with no audible impact even at very extreme settings.

I've been trying to follow along and troubleshoot with you guys, but still am having problems. My older G4 can't handle the DSP processing, but I would like to use the plugin for the parametric EQ. I was using a second XP box that could handle the DSP functions until a few weeks back when I just got tired of having a second machine running all the time. Until I find the will to buy a new iMac, I have to lose the DSP.

Can the EQ run without the DSP on a mac?
Install tip for plugin on OSX

While playing around with SqueezeCenter 7.01 on OSX I noticed that it supports plugin folders outside the main application install directory. This means you can put Inguz out of the way and when you upgrade SC you don't lose the plugins. It seems to work fine in this location fine for me.

Note: As far as I can tell you still have to put the DSP inside the server/bin folder so a SqueezeCenter upgrade isn't completely painless, but at least it's one less thing to copy around!

The folder you want is

<user name>/Library/Application Support/SqueezeCenter/Plugins

Copy the InguzEQ folder into here and restart SS to pick up the change.

Install OK but no effects

Hi,

I guess you are playing MP3 files. As inguz stated in the instillation page, “To playback MP3 files with InguzDSP, you will need to install LAME.” If you don’t have LAME, then the EQ doesn’t work on your MP3 playback.

As a sanity check, play non MP3 files such as AAC and make sure that the EQ works. You should also check the log file as ingus suggested. BTW, I installed mine on SC 7.0 and I was getting many clipping messages so I had to reduce the gain by 1. (See http://inguzaudio.com/usage/config).

Once you have confirmed that the EQ works on non MP3 files and want to make the EQ work on MP3 format (Internet radio stream for instance), install lame.exe on your computer (follow the instruction on this page: http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/AAC )

After installing lame.exe, restart SC, play a MP3 file, and check the log file! (I normally delete all messages in log file first and then start playing a music file, to make sure that I get the latest log on the music file.)

Good luck.
Nekola

By applying that to DRC, I would expect DRC to actually boost the high end to compensate for this roll off.

I think you forgot one "minus sign" :-). It IS confusing...

if the mic calibration file rolls off at high frequency, it means (as you say) the mic would measure a flat curve as rolled off. It would measure a rising high f curve as flat. Hence if you input a flat response to drc with that cal file, drc attenuates high f.

Now I don't know what the actual response of my mic is, but with it recording while aimed up neither of those cal files gives a good response. The drc one is just bad, and the REW one rolls off high f (at least to my ears). So my strategy is to trust that my speakers are at least reasonably flat at high f. What I'm doing right now is only equalizing the curve up to 5kHz or so, using REW. Alternatively drc with no cal file gives me something roughly similar.

I'd recommend trying REW - you have everything you need already. Just open the impulse response file generated by impulseprep using audacity, export it as a 16-bit WAV, import it to REW, have REW generate a correction filter (which it will do automatically, although I've gotten better results adjusting the filters manually), and then export the filter impulse response and try it with inguz.

There's still one thing I know that might cause the "object variable not set" crash. If your left and right channel measurements are slightly different lengths, such that one of them is less than a power-of-two and the other is more than a power-of-two, then you might see this.

I'm not recommending anyone change their behavior to account for that bug though (e.g. by trimming measurements to exactly the same length), unless you are actually hit by it.

Desinstallation issue

Sorry about this. It turns out that there's a bug in the original installer: in order to install but also to uninstall, it checks for presence of SlimServer. So if you've uninstalled SlimServer in the meantime, the installer can't carry on.

The SqueezeCenter installer will fix it. Should be ready in a few days. But meanwhile you can just manually install the new pieces over the old, without causing any disruption.
